Do you tip at a spa? How much, and what spa chains and resorts say
The fumble at the front desk is avoidable. A person who worked on you gets a tip and a room you rented does not, and the spa chains, resorts and bathhouses below say in writing how they handle the rest.

Entry to a sauna, cold plunge or float tank is not where tips go, because spas attach gratuity to services. At hotel and resort spas, read the bill first: Omni’s spas add a service charge of 20 to 24 percent, while Miraval and Canyon Ranch are no-tipping.
The rule of thumb is simple: a person who worked on you gets a tip, and a room you rented does not. What changes from place to place is how the tip is handled. It can be on top, already in the price, added as a service charge, or not accepted at all.
Below is what spa chains, resorts and bathhouses publish on their own websites, read on October 27, 2026. Policies change, and franchise locations can set their own, so the front desk has the last word.
How much do you tip for a massage or facial?
About 20 percent of the regular price of the service.
The two US chains that put a number in writing both say 20. Burke Williams calls a tip “customary” and says “Standard hospitality rates suggest a minimum of 20%,” at your discretion. Heyday, a facial chain, says tipping is optional, but “20% of the service cost (products not included) is standard for beauty services.” Elements Massage gives no number. It suggests you think of your therapist “as you would a waiter in a restaurant.”
Base the tip on the full regular price, as Elements Massage recommends (“the full price of a regular massage, rather than the discounted price”), not on a member or package rate. Heyday counts the service only, not products you buy.

Most of the chains we checked do not put a tipping percentage in writing, and the two that do both say 20 percent.

Hotel and resort spas: service charges and no-tipping resorts
Resorts split two ways. Some are no-tipping, and others, including Omni’s hotel spas, add a service charge to the bill instead of leaving the tip to you.

A service charge is not the same thing as a tip. Under federal labor rules, “A compulsory charge for service” is not a tip, even if the employer passes it on to staff, while a tip is something “determined solely by the customer.” Omni says its charge goes to the staff who assisted you. Elsewhere, if you want to know where the money goes, ask.
So the same massage can carry a tip at a franchise studio, a set service charge at a hotel spa, and nothing at a no-tipping resort.
Bathhouses and Korean spas: entry versus treatments
The bathhouses we checked tie the tip to treatments such as body scrubs, not to entry, and each handles it differently.
- King Spa in Chantilly, Virginia: “An 18% gratuity will be added on service and can be adjusted at checkout.”
- Island Spa & Sauna: “All spa service pricing includes the gratuity already.”
- Olympus Spa in Lynnwood, Washington: “Gratuity is excluded in the service price,” and “tips are cash only.”
So at one house the tip is added for you, at another it is already in the price, and at a third you bring cash. Our Korean spa guide covers the house rules for a first visit.
When you do not need to tip
Entry to a self-serve room. If you book time in a sauna, cold plunge, infrared cabin or float tank and use it yourself, nobody performed a service on you. The operators that publish a gratuity rule attach it to services: King Spa adds its 18 percent “on service,” and the LakeHouse Spa adds 25 percent to “a la carte personal services.” One exception: The Omni Grove Park Inn adds its 22 percent service charge to spa day passes too.
A no-tipping resort. At Miraval and Canyon Ranch, gratuity is included or not accepted.
Group classes. None of the chains, resorts or bathhouses above publishes a rule for tipping a yoga, Pilates or spin instructor. If you want to thank one, ask the studio how.
When the owner gives the treatment. None of the chains or agencies we read sets an etiquette rule for tipping an owner who does the work. If you are unsure, offering is fine.
Who gets the tip, and how to pay it
If several people worked on you, ask the desk how tips are shared, because published policies differ. Heyday says “100% of the gratuity goes directly to your Esthetician,” while Omni’s spas distribute their service charge among the staff who assisted you. Under federal rules, an employer can share tips among employees but “may not keep tips received by its employees.”
How you pay differs too. Massage Envy lets a gift card pay the tip, while Olympus Spa takes tips in cash only. If you are unsure, ask at check-in, or carry a little cash.
Gift cards and the tip
Whether a gift card covers the tip depends on the card.
- Massage Envy: yes, its cards “may be used to redeem for services, Wellness Agreement purchases, retail, tax, and gratuities.” Its free promotional cards cannot be used for gratuities.
- Elements Massage: no, its FAQ says “Gratuity is not included” in its gift cards.
- Giving a massage or facial: add about 20 percent. Heyday suggests covering “the base price plus any applicable state tax, and a 20% gratuity.”

Tipping at a spa outside the US
Norms differ by country, so the US 20 percent does not travel. Japan’s national tourism organization says “Japan does not have a tipping culture” and that you “only need to pay the amount shown on the bill.” Elsewhere, check the norms where you are going before you apply the US default.

Omni’s spas add 20 to 24 percent, and most of them say anything more is up to you; Omni Tucson National says extra gratuities are “accepted for exceptional service.” A service charge is not legally a tip, so if you want to know who receives it, ask. Omni says its charge goes to the staff who assisted you.
Do you tip at Miraval or Canyon Ranch? No. Miraval calls itself “a no-tipping resort property,” and gratuities are included in its stays and day packages. Canyon Ranch says “No tipping, please.”
Do you tip at a med spa? Ask the clinic. None of the chains or resorts we checked publishes a separate tipping rule for injectables or laser treatments. At The Greenbrier, for example, the spa menu lists gratuity as additional to its treatments, but its MedSpa menu has no gratuity line.
Can you pay the tip with a spa gift card? It depends on the card. At Massage Envy, yes: its gift cards “may be used to redeem for services, Wellness Agreement purchases, retail, tax, and gratuities.” Elements Massage says gratuity is not included in its gift cards, and Massage Envy’s free promotional cards cannot be used for gratuities.
Do you tip for a sauna or cold plunge session? Not for entry to a self-serve room. Spas attach gratuity to services such as a massage or a body scrub. The exception is a resort spa that adds a service charge to day passes, such as The Omni Grove Park Inn’s 22 percent.
Should you tip on the full price or the discounted price? The full price. Elements Massage recommends basing the tip on “the full price of a regular massage, rather than the discounted price,” which also fits gift cards and deals.
The bottom line on spa tipping
Tip about 20 percent of the regular price for a massage or facial in the US, and check the bill first at hotel and resort spas, where a service charge may already cover it or a no-tipping policy may apply. Entry to a sauna, cold plunge or float tank is not where tips go.
When the policy is not written down, asking the front desk is normal. Nobody thinks less of a polite question.
