That comes from our sauna and cold plunge price index, where we read 203 prices on the websites of 114 venues in 22 cities and linked each one to its source. Nothing below is an estimate.

The single most useful number is your break-even. At the venues that publish both prices, an unlimited month pays for itself at a median of about four visits.

What does each kind of visit cost?

Here is what the index shows for one visit, as a median, with the middle half of prices in brackets.

A bathhouse visit usually buys two hours or more, while a private infrared session is often 30 to 45 minutes. So compare minutes as well as dollars.

Do private suites cost more than shared sessions?

Yes, by about two-thirds. A private sauna and cold plunge suite costs a median $72.50 in the index, against $44 for a shared or social session.

The ranges overlap, though. A private hour at Contrast Club in Nashville is $35, and a shared session at Moki Sauna in Boston is $59.

When does a membership actually pay?

Do the arithmetic before the studio does it for you.

An unlimited month costs a median $179 in the index, and the middle half cost $149 to $199. At Red Rock Sauna in Denver, for example, a drop-in is $35 and unlimited is $149 a month, so unlimited only pays from your fifth visit. Go twice a month and you have paid about $75 a visit for access you did not use.

A four-visit monthly plan is the honest middle option. Where a venue lists one next to its single price, it cuts the price per visit by a median of 46 percent, which suits a weekly habit.

Why is the price range so wide?

Because “sauna and cold plunge” describes several different businesses.

A social sauna club sells time in a shared circuit and lives on volume, so its sessions are among the cheapest. A private suite studio sells a room for one or two, and charges for it. A bathhouse or banya sells a longer visit with several heat rooms and pools.

City matters too, and so does the individual studio. The same franchise, Perspire Sauna Studio, charges $39 for a single infrared session in Houston and $60 in Austin and Culver City. Among the 11 cities where we found at least four single-visit prices, New York has the highest median ($65), and Denver/Boulder, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Seattle the lowest ($35).

What should make you suspicious of a price?

Two things.

A premium charged for cryotherapy or IV drips framed as performance, longevity or anti-aging outcomes, because the evidence does not support the bigger claims.

And an aggressive annual contract with a cancellation fee, sold on your first visit, before you know whether you will use it. A studio confident in its product sells you a single session and lets the practice do the persuading.
