Miraval Austin vs Lake Austin Spa Resort: which one fits you?
Both fold meals, classes and spa facilities into the rate, and they could hardly feel more different: a device-free preserve campus with a nightly resort credit, against an all-inclusive lakeside resort where the phone stays with you and the dog can come too.
Short answer: Choose Miraval Austin if you want to switch off completely. It is a digital device-free environment for guests 18 and over, on 220-plus acres of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, and its Miraval Package includes a $175 nightly resort credit for spa and private sessions. Choose Lake Austin Spa Resort if you want the water and fewer rules. It is all-inclusive on Lake Austin, with paddleboards, kayaks and hydrobikes in the rate, phones allowed on silent, guests from 16 and dogs welcome, but spa treatments are booked separately.
Both resorts are in the Hill Country on the edge of Austin, both are built around a spa, and both fold meals, classes and spa facilities into the nightly rate. The difference is in the house rules and in what the rate buys.
Miraval describes its stay as “inclusive, but not all-inclusive” and gives you a nightly credit to spend on treatments. Lake Austin calls itself all-inclusive, includes gratuities, and bills treatments separately. One asks you to put the phone away; the other asks you to put it on silent.
This is the lens we would hand a friend, not a review of a stay. We have not inspected either property in person, and we only recommend what we would send a friend to. We take no listing fees from anyone mentioned here.

Inclusive or all-inclusive: the real difference
Miraval’s packages page puts it in four words: inclusive, but not all-inclusive. The rate covers accommodation, all meals and non-alcoholic drinks, the daily schedule, spa facilities and gratuities, and treatments, fee-based activities and private sessions come out of a nightly resort credit. On the Miraval Package, that credit is $175 a night. The Ultimate Wellbeing Package goes further: Miraval says almost every fee-based activity and workshop is included, plus the same nightly credit toward spa and private sessions. Premium zero-proof cocktails cost extra either way.
Lake Austin’s what’s included page says the nightly rate covers all meals and snacks, speakers, resort experiences, lake equipment and a wide range of wellness activities, without additional charges or gratuities. Spa treatments are booked separately, and a few calendar items carry their own fee: the activity calendar marks a wine cruise as sign-up with an additional fee.
In practice, the credit at Miraval absorbs part of what you spend on treatments, while at Lake Austin every treatment is added to the bill. Price both with the treatments you actually want before you compare.
What Miraval Austin gives you that Lake Austin does not
A full switch-off, protected land and a farm.
Miraval says plainly that it is a digital device-free environment. That culture, which the brand calls Miraval Mode, is the product as much as the spa is. If the reason for the trip is to put your phone away for three days, this is the resort that holds you to it.
The land is the other reason. Miraval Austin sits on 220-plus acres in the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, and the resort says 170 of those acres will never be developed and that the endangered golden-cheeked warbler nests there each year. Cypress Creek Farm on the property supplies produce and eggs for the meals, and the daily schedule mixes preserve hikes and farm visits with challenge work such as the Quantum Leap, a leap from a 25-foot pole. The site’s history starts with The Crossings, which opened in 2003 and was reborn as Miraval’s second resort in 2019.
Getting there is simple: the shared shuttle from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is included in the stay.
What it asks of you: guests must be 18 or over, and the device-free culture applies to you as much as anyone.
What Lake Austin Spa gives you that Miraval does not
The lake, fewer rules and a simpler bill.
The water is the centre of the stay. Paddleboards, kayaks and hydrobikes are included, the calendar runs activities on the lake, and the resort’s water taxi makes a scenic 40-minute run up from Walsh Landing in downtown Austin, which the resort says is a 15-minute ride share from the airport.
The house rules are softer. Lake Austin’s FAQ asks guests to silence phones and to ask permission before filming or photographing a class or program, but phones are allowed. Overnight and spa guests must be 16 or older, with 16 to 18 year olds accompanied by an adult, and the resort welcomes dogs, service dogs included. It serves wine, beer and mixed cocktails, though guests may not bring their own.
The rooms are cottages and bungalows rather than a hotel block. They include Hot Tub Cottages, each with a private meditation garden and an outdoor private hot tub, and the Lady Bird Johnson Cottage Suite, named for Lady Bird Johnson, whom the resort calls one of its favourite guests.
Gratuities are included, so at checkout you pay for what you added, not for tips.
What it asks of you: firm booking terms, covered below.
Saunas, steam and hot tubs at both resorts
Both spas have the full heat circuit, and staying guests can use it without booking a treatment. Miraval’s Life in Balance Spa lists a quiet room, locker rooms, hot tubs, a steam room, a sauna, and a serenity pool with a hot tub. Lake Austin says its spa facilities, including the sauna, steam room and whirlpools, are open to all resort guests whether they are having a treatment or not.
If heat is the point of the trip, our guide to your first sauna session covers the rounds, and our sauna vs hot tub comparison explains what each one does for you.
If you only have a day
Both sell day visits, so you can try one before you commit to a stay. Miraval’s Day Spa Packages include the on-property restaurant, two heated pools, the Life in Balance Spa with its steam rooms, saunas and hot tubs, and the fitness center, and its day spa hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
Lake Austin sells two day passes: the Tranquility Pass at the LakeHouse Spa, or a Resort and Spa pass with lake and spa access, pools, wellness programs, fitness classes, dining and lake equipment. The resort says only a limited number of day spa reservations are available, so book ahead.
Booking terms to read before you pay
Lake Austin publishes firm terms. Its FAQ says a $1,000 deposit per person is required at booking, the whole deposit is forfeited if you cancel or change the reservation 21 days or less before arrival, and there are no refunds for early departures. The resort recommends travel insurance.
At Miraval, the resort credit depends on the package you book, so confirm the credit for your package before you pay. Its cancellation terms were not on the pages we read; ask for them with your quote.
Neither resort lists a fixed nightly rate on its site. Get quotes for the same dates, add the treatments you want at Lake Austin, and compare the totals.
When neither is the answer
Austin gets a third inclusive spa resort in October 2026, when Canyon Ranch opens on Lake Travis, and it publishes its prices. Our Canyon Ranch Austin guide sets it against both of these.
If what you want is heat, cold and quiet, a weekly habit at home may serve you better over a year than one expensive stay, and our Austin cold plunge and contrast therapy roundup is the local version. If you like the Miraval model but want different land, Miraval Austin vs Miraval Arizona sets the two campuses side by side.
For the wider field, our Texas Hill Country retreat guide covers the region, and accessible destination spas compared and luxury destination spas compared cover the destination-spa field on either side of the price line.
